My son has had Minecraft installed on our computer since 2012. He had had no problems whatsoever...until a few days ago when he clicked on the launcher on the desktop to start the game. The launcher would not open, and instead an error message came up:
Any idea what this means or what to do about it? I have found the Minecraft files, so it seems it's still there.
Please offer us any solutions...my son is very upset! Will re-installing the game help? (My son is worried about losing his maps.) If so, could someone outline for me how to do this? (For example - do we need to delete the old files? How do we save the old maps? How do you reinstall?)
Other info: I don't know much about computers but my husband is quite knowledgeable. System is a 3 year old gaming system running Windows 10. Son plays vanilla Minecraft, either by himself or on various mini-game type servers. It is the regular PC version of Minecraft (not Minecraft for Windows 10). I'm sure it's probably the latest update.
i can tell you that this problem is NOT about minecraft itself, so you don't need to mess up your installation. windows seems to be unable to run java due to some registry error.
- check if you have any special characters in your username (like ? ! etc.)
- check if windows can run java commands. in a command prompt/terminal, run
java -version
- verify that you have java installed (search for the installation files, usually in C:\Program Files\Java\ )
- clear your ENTIRE java installation, then install java (preferably 1.8)

Hi,

Launch4j The registry refers to a nonexistent Java Runtime Environment installation or the Runtime is corrupted. The system cannot find the file specified.
Any idea what this means or what to do about it? I have found the Minecraft files, so it seems it's still there.
