Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'm new around here.
Whenever I make a LAN world on my Windows machine, I can't connect to it with my Mac, and vice versa. They're on the same Minecraft version (1.8.9,) no mods, and the firewall is off on both machines.
They're both connected to the same Wi-Fi network, but the Windows machine is on Ethernet whereas the Mac isn't.
Open your cmd and type ipconfig and find IPv4. Use that and the port so it would be IP:Port and connect. Or in Direct Connect enter localhost. It also could be because one is an Apple Computer and the other is Windows and Windows doesn't like connecting to other OS. Just windows. Try both using Windows or Mac

I've tried using the IPv4 address, it didn't work. I actually haven't tried localhost, trying now.
I don't think it's an OS issue, I couldn't connect to LAN with 2 Macs either.
EDIT: Using localhost gives me the message: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: No further information:

You have to be near the host PC and connected to the same internet
The computers are next to each other, and I said in the OP that we're on the same network.

Sounds like the firewall is blocking connections.
Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.

Did you use the IPv4 and the port
