There aren't any blocks above my bed that would suffocate me--when I sleep in my bed I wake up normally. Yet whenever I die I get the message "Your home bed was missing or obstructed" and end up respawning at my original spawn point(which is thankfully within sight of my house and farm). What's going on?
I wake up on top of it, but that still doesn't tell me what's supposedly obstructing it. While there's no moat or anything of the sort, the floor around it is carpeted, so I tried removing the carpet and seeing if that'd work. Still woke up on top of it.
That was a bit of a "duh" moment at first, since I have a ladder right above and a banner on either side. Knocked down the banners, two ladder segments, and the surrounding carpet(again)...still woke up on the bed.
Knocked down the adjacent glowstone and replaced it with blue stained clay. Finally woke up beside the bed, and when I killed myself in my disposal lava pit to test it I respawned there as well. Thanks for the help!

The rules are more complicated than that.
When you sleep in the bed do you wake up on top of it (obstructed) or next to it (okay) ?
Things that obstruct can be things like having your bed be elevated (if you dig a moat around your bed it is now obstructed).

the floor is full or half blocks?
bed is on same level as adjacent floor?
floor blocks are spawnable blocks? i.e. the block type allows things to spawn on them?
No paintings or torches intruding into blocks around bed?
What do you mean full or half blocks?
Yes, at least when the floor is sans carpet

half blocks aka slabs.
doesn't matter. Glowstone isn't spawnable, so if your bed is surrounded completely by a glowstone floor, then it is obstructed.
