[FIXED]: Breeding a stupid number of animals seems to tax your client upload.. For some reason.
Howdy guys,
For some backstory, I run a small 5 slot minecraft server through a reputable server provider. We've been playing on it for weeks without issue until today.
My friend reports 80KB+ upload while on my server, which is the max upload of his internet. This obviously causes him to lag both ingame and out of game, while the game is running in the background.
We've troubleshooted disabling snooper and restarting both clients, computers and server with no change.
The issue does not effect anyone else on the server and occurs whether he is alone on the server or not.
We don't really know what to do; especially seeing googling "minecraft" + "upload" or anything net related results in only server help threads. Does anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting this further? Has this been heard of before?
A speedtest result won't help resolve anything; he is joining a paid, dedicated server; not hosting it on home internet. It should not be using more than 15-25KB/s upload, as is the case with my client joining the same server (or any server, for that matter). Instead, it reaches 80-100KB/s, which is his max upload rate.
We are hypothesizing that this has something to do with the server not coping, as I've found the box the server is hosted on is out of free memory, perhaps he is uploading to other clients.. But then, why is it only happening to him? And we are under 50% of our slot count..
I've got an upgrade in the pipeline; going to opt for 700mb-ish of ram on the VPS to see if that resolves it, otherwise we're out of ideas.
This only happens with his client and your server. no other server?
As far as I know the client only sends a limited amount of data to the server, so extra bandwidth would have to come from retransmissions. Why this would affect him more than any one else on your server is hard to know. The server might not be 'fair' in that certain users are processed preferentially. Or is this user in a different region than others and therefore requires different chunks to be loaded than the others do?
It seems to only occur on this specific server, but he hasn't tested many others. We have actually tried some things and it seems to occur only around our spawn point, where we have built. As this is a stock standard, vanilla server, I don't see how this is the case.. We will test further and I'll edit my post as I find out more.
Edit: Sorry, jtpetch, posted from an unrefreshed page and missed your comment.
80KB upload is above average consumer internet in Australia. They're working on our new 25/25MBit "for every home" ... Don't even get me started on our government.
We're measuring his upload using a little widget I sent him that I've been using for several years; freemeter.exe. The server is completely vanilla bar mcmyadmin and is running v1.10.
I was hosting the world myself before purchasing the remote server, and we had no issues prior, nor during the first week or two after going remote. I'll give that another go as you suggested and see what happens. If something's up with the remote server itself, maybe just a backup/restore will fix it.
Ah, alright, well 80kb is still low (in general), but it should be enough to play MC.
If he's maxing out his upload speed, then his whole network will have issues (I have the same problem when uploading YT vids, it just halts my whole network :P)
He could try using a program like Nebalancer to limit how much bandwidth MC gets, and see if that has any effect.

Well.. We've found the problem. ... Cows. He had a stack of cows in a small pen that amounted to somewhere in the vicinity of four stacks of beef. After The Great Slaughter, his upload has returned to normal. Hahaha.
I'll update the original post with the solution. Thanks anyway guys.

Hello,
Uploading things is taking alot of your internet. Run a free internet speedtest, search for it at Google. Please send me your result
Something i don't understand. Why are he uploading, and what is he uploading.

Can you try hosting a server yourself, and seeing if having a not overloaded server affects anything?
(Or, if you can't, I could host for a bit and test. PM me if you want to go that route, because I think testing this could help)
80kbps upload is really, really, really low for any brand of consumer internet. Time Warner much?
How's he measuring how much he's uploading to your server in particular?
Also, any mods? Spigot/bukkit? Or just vanilla? And which version?
