I recently updated to 1.9.4, and ever since my skin has glitched out. I used to be a sloth and now my entire skin (except for my belly and back) has turned black.
I've tried playing without optifine, downgrading to 1.9.3, downgrading to 1.8, playing on 1.8 servers, reuploading my skin as a steve model, and switching my skin to an alex model. Nothing has worked, and my skin appears this way for other players as well.

That sounds (and looks) a lot like there are transparent coloured pixels covering the top of your skin's head, legs and arms. MineCraft (of all versions) will force any part of a skin to be solid black, if it detects transparent colour on it. This is... I guess, to prevent players from using invisible skins.
Do you happen to have a copy of your skin image handy? Upload it to imgur, and link it here. I'll happily try my hand at fixing it. Or, just telling me your MineCraft username will work.

Thank you so much for mentioning the skin layers, I didn't even think to check that. They all re-enabled for some reason once I switched to 1.9.4 and after all the other steps I tried I never thought once to disable the hat layers. I have disabled them and my skin is back to normal, Thanks!

You're very welcome! =) I guess I don't need to check your skin, then lol. I'm glad you got it figured out!
