I went all out and set it 800 x 600. It was weird at first but now I like it and it gave me a nice jump in FPS and in FPS stability (my laptop is crap). But as to what you set it to is up to you, experiment with it until you get the results you want.
I need help. My Minecraft lags a lot when in full-screen. I get like 15 FPS. But in small screen, I get 90 FPS. Please help!!!
Adjust the resolution, you will need Optifine for this though. It's good to have if you don't want to do that anyways.

I set it to 640x480 (I think) and it gave me 200 FPS. But, I don't like the quality.
Then make the resolution better, find the happy medium of quality and performance.
