You can use that same guide to allocate less, but it's not recommended.
That's just how much MC uses. It will work with lower amounts, but it will most likely run worse. 1.5gb (1500mb) of ram actually isn't much at all, especially compared to modern games and programs, and the fact that the average ram amount on desktops is 8gb now.
If that much ram being used is taking 47% of your ram, then I'm willing to bet you have 4-6gb total, no?
In that case, 1.5gb is totally acceptable for MC, unless you absolutely need to do a bunch of other stuff alongside it.
I run MC with 8gb (of my 16), and it rarely reaches over 2-3, unless I run an amped world, a load of mods, or have friends on with redstone stuff happening. It's overkill, but the general rule of thumb is to allocate more than you think you need, unless you can't, because unless you're dedicating 16gb+, or you have an absolutely terrible CPU, it won't diminish your performance, and it isn't actually being used until MC starts needing it.
Ok, hmmm... I just notice that on my old computer I ran it and it used much less memory (500-600MB) and there was much less lag and the computer was much quieter.
I am using 1.7.10. I am getting incredibly low fps (under 20) because of the fact that I am using too much memory. I know for a fact that the most the game needs is 700 MB, and on my original laptop I played it like that and always got at least 60 fps. Now, whenever I reach over 900 MB, the fps goes REALLY low. How would you allocate less memory to MC (less than 800MB)
I do sometimes have problems with my web browser, Google Chrome. I don't really have many other games since this laptop is new. When I am on Chrome, sometimes I will experience computer lag: the letters appear on the screen 2 seconds after I type, things load slowly, etc. However, I am never running over 500MB on any other program. I have well over 12000MB in total worth of ram :/
Even newer versions of Minecraft do not use more than 200-300 MB of memory unless you are using extreme render distances (over 16; the game doesn't even let you go over that unless you allocate 2 GB or use Optifine, which ignores this limit), HD resource packs (and even that is debatable), or memory-inefficient mods. For example, here is how much memory the game uses for me, running vanilla 1.5.2 and 1.9.2, and modded 1.6.4 (my computer only has 3 GB total and is 32 bit to boot, which means I can't even use more than 1 GB; during normal playing I allocate 768 MB with -Xmx768M -Xms768M -Xss1024K and I've played for 8 hours straight without any problems aside from a full GC spike lasting for a second every 30-60 minutes):
(a lack of memory is most definitely NOT why 1.8-1.9 run poorly for me. The last one shows 100% allocated since that was during normal gameplay and the JVM arguments I use allocate all the memory from the start; if you allocate a lot more you shouldn't though since it can decrease GC efficiency; in this case used memory gradually rises to near 100% before a full GC occurs, I do not see any change in performance until then)
Also see this post, where they tested the game with 512 MB-4 GB allocated, with the actual used memory staying around 200-300 MB (with a higher render distance than what I used; 12 chunk render distance loads twice as many chunks as 8).
Lag that occurs as memory usage increases is often a sign of physical RAM being exhausted, which will cause the OS to swap to disk, which is orders of magnitude slower even with SSD drives.
I'm wondering, what exactly do your JVM arguments look like, particularly "Xmn"? Many people edit that one from the default Xmn128M to something much higher, which causes all sorts of issues and is the first thing I think of when I see somebody having odd memory issues.
There is this error message: Something's taking too long! 'root.gameRenderer' took aprox 352.162765 ms
I know this is the exact reason for my lag, as using the f3 shift screen I can tell that the game renderer is taking over 70% of the memory and causing the lag. I also notice in creative if i fly up to around y=60 on a superflat world my fps suddenly like skyrockets from like 10 to 120, due the the fact that there is nothing to render. Anybody have a solution for this root game renderer thing?
Posting a DXDiag would be helpful, because if you only lag when you "look at stuff", and that uses a lot of ram, your GPU could be having to offload some things to your normal memory, because it's own is full.
So yeah, a DXDiag log please, so we can see your specs.

I know theres a bunch of junk there as well. I would also like to note that recently today sometime while I was at school my computer auto-updated the system along with a bunch of drivers. Since then, I have been getting significantly better fps, but still low (upper 20s instead of dipping to 0-10). I am also having less of the game freezing moments. These specs are after the update.
Yeah after my computer somehow auto updated itself while I was at school, my fps has been back to normal (60+). Its nice playing at 100 fps again. However, I would still like to address the "Something's taking too long! 'root' gamerenderer" error. I think it is still there, just that after I updated my computer has been able to handle it.

It also reached 1500MB of memory before but i didnt manage to get a screenshot. How do I set a limit or decrease the memory?
Allocating more memory is not what I want. I want to allocate less memory.

Was it an older version? Newer versions of MC (objectively) use more ram.
The lag depends on a lot of things
It's "quietness" all depends on the hardware, and how it's cooled.

No, it is, you can allocate as little as you want.
Just use the same method, and type in 700 (or whatever amount) instead of the 2048 the guide said.
Now, the fact that it lags out whenever it goes over 900mb intrigues me.
Do you have this problem with other games, programs?
How much ram does it have total?
Since it's a latop, I don't recommend taking ram out to see if any are defective, but it's a last resort option if it's a physical memory problem.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Ok I think I realized why I was having this lag

There's two models of your laptop/tablet/thing that have an i7-6500U.
One with a 930m 2gb GPU, and one with just the integrated graphics card.
Lower down in your DXDiag, it should say which you have.
Or, if you just know which it is, then let me know.
Because if it's the one with the 930m, you should be able to crush (or at least run decently) Minecraft with it.
If it's the integrated, then you should still be able to run it alright, but not as well.
