I just got a new laptop and decided to put minecraft on it and was greeted by a laggy home screen. this is strange because my previous computer ran it smoother, but this one is better. I have an intel core 15 6200U at 2.3GHz, 8 gigs of ram (2 allocated to minecraft) and a Nvidia Geforce 940M. I have minecraft set to use the 940M only, and I know it should run well, but I dont know what is causing this. Someone please help.
also, which version are yoh using? if it's 1.8, it reminds of some hardware specific bugs the 1.8 had, i literally had 1 frame every 5 seconds in the main menu. i assume you use the latest version anyways, but it's worth asking.
I used HWmonitor. My cpu and gpu are not being maxed out (the cpu is getting close though). I did fix the title screen by setting java and javaw to use the Nvidia card instead of dedicated, but it still runs very weirdly and slowly. My cpu and gpu are not overheating. I know something is wrong that evades me because I have run minecraft better on a worse computer. I am also using the default texture pack. I tried installing optifine and it did not help.
It happens both on battery and plugged in. Cpu is set to max and it is on high performance mode. Graphics drivers are up to date. I am on the latest version of windows 10. This said, strangely it says the hd graphics are being used in the top right, although it did run better after I supposedly set it to use the 940M than it did when I originally posted this thread. I am going to do a bit more looking around to see if there is something else I must set to use the 940M. Thanks for your help by the way.
edit: Somehow java and javaw were still set to use the integrated. I got them to use the 940M and now minecraft is as smooth as I would have expected thanks for the help guys and especially you, jtpetch.

Well obviously it's because gaming laptops are terrible and desktop is the master race.
...
I kid, they're great.
Anywho, is it only MC that lags, or does every game have issues?
And could you run HWmonitor while playing, and see if your CPU or GPU are being maxed out? (Or overheated!)

I am using 1.9.4

Does it happen on battery, or also when plugged in?
Check your power settings, and make sure that the cpu is set to max (100%).
I had a friend whose laptop would only run at 0.7ghz because it was in power saving mode all the time, so that may be it.
And while you did set java and javaw to use the 940M, does it say that it's using it in game? (F3 menu, top right-ish)
Graphics drivers up to date?
Speaking of graphics drivers, are you on Windows 10?
