Shouldn't be falling this low with my specs. I've allocated extra RAM even though I know it doens't need it. I'm on an i5 4690k and a Radeon R9 280. When running Sildur's shader on high, it falls to about 25 fps. any way I can bring it back? I should be able to handle minecraft, no?
I got 8 GB, and I allocate 3 to Minecraft. It never really takes more than 600 MB max because it's Minecraft so not a problem. But like my CPU and GPU can both take it
what about ram? CPU and GPU arent the only 2 things playing part in a configuration.
RAM is by far the most overrated computer spec; in fact, this is what the shaders mod thread tells you about it (the same should apply to the shaders integrated into newer versions of Optifine):
- Java heap size
This can be set in Minecraft Launcher - Edit Profile - JVM Arguments
-Xmx1024M or -Xmx1G is usually enough. 2048M is plenty, depending on render distance and mods.
Don't set it too high.
ShadersMod and OpenGL requires a lot of memory outside java heap.
Make sure you have enough memory remaining outside java heap.
In other words, the default allocation (1 GB) is absolutely fine (and more than enough for vanilla) unless you want to use 32 chunk render distance or something - most if not all of the additional memory that shaders needs is video memory (on your GPU unless it is integrated) and native memory outside of Java (this is particularly important if you have a 32 bit PC, but 64 bit can also be affected, and explains some odd out of memory conditions that occur despite plenty of free memory in-game).
ETA: When you allocated 3 GB you didn't happen to change the argument -Xmn128M, did you? Many people increase it to a much higher value and get poor performance and/or lag spikes since they assume it only gives the game 128 MB of RAM to work with, which is not true at all (it changes how Java uses part of the total memory it can use).
I'm afk rn, but I will check to make sure the rest is fine. So I should allocate less to leave more for Java? Also my graphics card has 3 GB VRAM, which should be enough right?

Curse PremiumThis is intentional. Shaders munch on your PC pretty quickly. If your PC is not up to them, don't use them.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
