Run the program, choose "I accept", then "Do a scan and save a log file". After a while a text file will open. Copy everything, put the log on http://paste.ubuntu.com and give us the link.
Glad I found this, but you don't have to actually uninstall Avast. I just turned its shields off for 10 mins to see if that would let it work, and its finally updating now.

Have tried updating launcher
That is the message i receive when i try to start the launcher. I cant even get to the launcher itself.

post a speedtest.net result and what antivirus do you use?

Uninstalling Avast worked, must have been something on there blocking Minecraft. Thanks for the help, Webrosc.

Moderatoravast typically isn't an issue with minecraft, but it has been known to install badly and reinstalling it clears the issue
