As the topic says, I am attempting to install Better than Wolves, and hit a little snag. The launcher keeps overwriting the game executable with a vanilla copy of the game.
I followed the directions how to install the mod to a T, I even installed it fresh multiple times. I even made sure that the jar file contained the mod (correctly) by closing it, reopening (with either winrar or 7zip) prior to launch to make sure it's there. And it is. Launch minecraft from the launcher only to be met with "downloading/updating BTW.jar" YUP, it is definitely overwriting the file.
So is there a way to prevent this stupid "hand holding" behavior of the launcher, or am I going to have to find a way to launch the game without the launcher?
If you want to use the vanilla launcher, the fix is actually extremely simple.
Assuming you've copied the base MC version folder and renamed, etc, to stop it from overwriting the modified JAR, scroll to the bottom of the version JSON:
You need to remove the "downloads" section from the JSON:
After you do that, the modified file will work without any issue.

Thanks in advance.
Thanks, it appears that I didn't really know about custom launchers. Found one that seems to work.
