First, I will show you my computer, to explain it's not a problem with it.
SPECS:
CPU: AMD FX-6300 6-cores 3.5ghz
GPU: GTX 750 1GB
RAM: 8GB
HDD: 1TB
OS: WINDOWS 10
Okay. Basically, I always play in 1.8 and 1.9, with and without optifine, and I always get 150+ fps with almost none lag spikes or lag at all, with any render distance, fancy graphics, you know, everything at max.
But recently I tried playing a 1.7.10 server, and it's impossible. Even with low settings i have constant lag. Each 0,5 secs (literally, half a second) I get lag spikes, like it dropped from 150 to 4 fps for half a sec and then came back. Sometimes it freezes for some secs and then comes back. I tried optifine, i tried everything, putting settings to the minimum but this keeps going.
Do you know how can I solve it? I really need it for a YT series. Thanks!
PS: Please, don't just say "Install Optifine". I need a configuration or something inside or outside Minecraft that can help me. Thanks!
Only thing I can think of, because I had this same problem as well, is that maybe it has to do with the fact that 1.8 added a ton of optimization to the game, something that was definitely lacking in previous versions.
While I agree that you shouldn't be experiencing this amount of lag, I do believe you may need to lower some of your settings.
I can't quite remember what it was, but I remember it was a particular setting that messed with my game. I put everything to default and it fixed the issue, then I slowly starting changing my settings to my preference to see which one cause the issue, then I was able to try and fix it.
EDIT: I know you've already tried lowering your settings, but how bad is the lag if you "default" them? Is it the same? Also, I know you've already tried using Optifine so I was curious what other mods you have installed, if your graphics card is up to date and what version of Java you are using?
Always same lag. Minimum, default, max settings. My graphics card is a GTX 750 1GB, newest drivers.
It's not "LAG" itself, it's like always a really awful performance compared to 1.6, 1.8, 1.9. Like it lags each 0,5 seconds, sometimes gets frozen for 1,5 seconds or so. Its like instead of the 200 fps it shows, i'd have 20 or 30 and constantly dropping and coming back.
I've got a modpack for a YT Series, but tried with other modpacks and its the same. Then tried similar modpacks on 1.8 and it runs perfectly.

What mods are you using? If you are not using any mods, then this should be in the Unmodified Client support.

Try render distance to "tiny".

How about scanning for viruses, since viruses may prevent Minecraft from behaving in performance?
Have done it, nothing changed.
