Although possible, I'm not sure that would be the case...Minecraft will run even on the most basic of computers running on integrated on-board graphics
Not sure what your point is, unless you think because the game looks simple that it would run on anything. The link I provided is to a real bug report on the official site and is an issue many people had with 1.9. Additionally that specific problematic frame usually indicates a graphic driver issue.
My PC is an Alienware M17 laptop, 16Gb ram, 1Tb hard drive, Nvidia 770M graphics. I have been running Minecraft on this for over a year.
I also don't believe my Nvidia driver was part of the problem. The only thing I changed, on my PC, was the update for Java, then I did a PC restart. Minecraft crashed on my first attempt to start it after installing Java 77.
LOL at people who think just because Minecraft "looks simple" it will run on any old pile of rubbish. (not directed at you OP)
Pappo, have you tried clicking "run as administrator"? I vaguely remember having this problem crop up before and that seemed to fix it. It was some trouble with the launcher, not Minecraft per se.
There is an alternative launcher available on Mojang's site if that fails, try googling it.
I said, in my gear description that my laptop included a Nvidia 970M graphics card. That is the graphics I am running Minecraft on, and have been for over a year. This problem only surfaced with the Java 77 update.
No, you're not. Otherwise you wouldn't be crashing with a report pointing to Intel drivers.
This is an Intel driver for 4th generation (Haswell) Intel HD graphics. Your laptop is not configured to run Minecraft on the Nvidia card. Minecraft is running on the Intel HD and crashing due to Intel bugs. Workaround for which is detailed in the FAQ.
If you don't want to deal with Intel then set up your Nvidia application profile.
grimallq - thanks for the info. I'm not familiar with how to check my Nvidia profile setup. I will read the FAQ,and look for the latest Intel HD Graphics driver.
I guess I wrongly assumed that since everything has been running fine, until after I installed the Java 77 update, that Java was the cause, and not a graphics driver. I restored my system to a point 7 days previous and everything started working again.
I installed Java_Runtime_Environment_(64bit)_v8_Update_77 yesterday and Minecraft started throwing all kinds of exceptions when it tried to start.

# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:

# Problematic frame:
# C [ig75icd64.dll+0x12177]
I used a restore point to return to Java_Runtime_Environment_(64bit)_v8_Update_73 and Minecraft started working again.
Perhaps your video card drivers are out of date? See this bug report for more info:

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Are others using Java 77 with no problems?

By profile I assume you mean the setup, in Nvidia Control panel.
I did use the panel to add java and minecraft applications to use the Nvidia GPU and not the Intel, and I was able to login to Minecraft.
I went to Dell drivers and downloaded their latest Intel HD graphics driver, but it would not install. Still investigating.
Thanks grimallq for this tutorial on GPU setup.
