I am on Windows 8.1 and whenever i try to log into minecraft it gives me that error. I've tried my brothers account as well, with the same error. I can still log into the website from my computer however. I have updated Java, and even completely purged minecraft and Java from my computer and then reinstalled them. Restarted computer, disabled firewall, added https://libraries.minecraft.net/ to my internet options trusted sites, nothing fixes it. Any help would be great
edit: also, even though i freshly downloaded it from minecraft.net today, the launcher says it is Minecraft Launcher 1.6.61
Okay. My 14 year old son made a recommendation to use the TechnicLauncher and it worked beautifully. I simply installed the Vanilla mod pack and everything works as it should!!!!! I have had this problem for months, so I hope this helps others as a workaround for whatever causes the error.
I hate to be just another "me too" poster.. but, me too. I have tried reinstalling minecraft and java, turning off all anti-virus and firewall protection, and many other "fixes" that the internet has offered. Nothing works. I'm getting the same "can't update native launcher" and "can't connect to minecraft servers" errors. Frustration is no longer an applicable word.
Also, even though I got the native launcher to update itself (FINALLY), it still will not accept an install of Forge.. says it can't download a short list of files.. and in the off chance I get the game to actually load up, it cannot load any worlds. It always freezes up somewhere around Building or Downloading Terrain. What went wrong, Minecraft? I can't remember ever having such problems when nothing changed, to my knowledge. I just wanted to play Minecraft one day, and it said No. Why did I pay for a game that won't let me play it?

Bump
I have this same problem on Windows 10.
I even reset Windows 10, reinstalled the launcher and java, and the error remains.
I have tried disabling antivirus, firewall. etc., but I have the same problem.
I can run the Minecraft executable rather than the installer, but Minecraft always locks when "Building Structures" when trying to load a world.
Please help!

Where does one get this TechnicLauncher?
Minecraft worked on our PCs for more than a year.... not now. And can't fix it for anything.
I have this EXACT same problem, even the "Building Structures" crash. Tried a reinstall and was given the "EOFException".
