sorry for not replying, avast normally isn't an issue with minecraft, but it can be if its had a bad install, try removing avast and trying minecraft, if it works put avast back, if not then put avast back and provide a HijackThis log
Trend Micro HijackThis is a utility that is used to collect diagnostic reports of your computer to help narrow down an issue you may be having. Download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/
Run the program, choose "I accept", then "Do a scan and save a log file". After a while a text file will open. Copy everything, put the log on http://paste.ubuntu.com and give us the link.
and a bunch of others. The solution seems to be either a firewall or anti-virus blocking the game from connecting. Turn off all firewall and anti-virus and see if that works. If it does, then get new firewall or anti-virus.

This issue is most commonly caused by a broken installation of Avast! free edition Anti-virus software. A reinstallation of Avast! and a reboot usually fixes it.
I will keep trying by deleting the Minecraft folder, or uninstalling it and then reinstalling it, but all the time I get this Crash Report:

I guess people kind of gave up on helping me play, hence I made this post 2 weeks ago.
I'll just contact Mojang directly, support is to hard to come by here, and I don't want to have $20 wasted because of an unhelpful community.
The same issue was reported here
http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/unmodified-minecraft-client/2280266-minecraft-cannot-create-a-new-world-and-cannot
http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/unmodified-minecraft-client/2626420-building-terrain-crash

Curse Premiumnow this really fits:
found here: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-34749
which webrosc suggested on April 10th. No evidence OP tried it though.
As for Hijack This. GetNowUpdater is suspicous.
