I just built a new computer and installed ubuntu 15.10 64 bit on it. I installed minecraft and OpenJDK 7, and tried to start the game. it started the first time and ran very well. I closed it and restarted it, but as soon as I clicked the minecraft.jar file, it hung on "starting launcher". Since then, the game will not start, it just stays on the starting launcher message and does nothing. I have tried everything I can find online, but it is all for windows os having this problem. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling both minecraft and openjdk, but nothing has helped. Can someone help? I really want to be able to play the game!
Perhaps try Oracle Java instead. I've never had the same problem your describing but I have had several issues with Minecraft and OpenJDK in the past such as random crashes, memory leaks, and even graphical errors. When I switched to Oracle Java all those problems stopped and I was getting faster and more stable game play. It might or might not solve your problem but it's worth a shot. There's no .deb version of the file so you'd need to either work with the tarball or use this repository.

Thanks, that fixed it.
