I am trying to help my ten year old daughter use mods on Minecraft 1.9 on Windows. I have no idea where to start and could use help from anyone willing. I don't know what forge and curse and these clients are all about or if they are necessary. I don't know where to start. What do I need to know? Are there some that are easier than others to use? Any simple step by steps or tips to get someone started would be greatly appreciated. Even if you don't have the time or expertise, it would be great if you could point me towards any resources that will help me learn. Thanks.
Welcome to the world that is modding! Heres how you need to start-
Before you go into the struggle of installing individual mods, I may as well mention modpacks. These are (sometimes) hundreds of compiled mods you can easily install through a separate launcher. All you have to do is select the modpack you wish to use and wait for in install! Below is a couple links to launchers that will allow you to do this.
Modpacks not your cup of tea? Heres how to install individual mods.
Now i will warn that this process seems a little lengthy but its not hard at all once you get the hang of it
1. pick your minecraft version. You mentioned 1.9 so lets use that in this example
2. Download minecraft forge for minecraft 1.9. use this link and click "installer" under "recommended" and wait for download
3. Now run this program once installed
4. So to get actual mods, you first have to load up your launcher and create a new "profile" that has the version set to the forge version that was just installed.
5. Made it this far? now start your game with this profile and wait for everything to load. Once done, on the menu there should be a "mods" button and a bit of extra text on the side. That means your on the right track
6. Now shut down your game and go to the game folder. if you dont know how to find it, use the "run" command and search "%appdata%" which brings you to where you find the ".minecraft" folder
7. Inside, you should see a "mods" folder (another good sign). And here is where you install your mods to.
8. Note: to install a mods it must be for version 1.9 with your current setup. If you want do all of this for another version, install the corresponding forge version
9. Your final step, download your mod from whatever website and it should give you a file that says "(modname).jar). now drag it to your mods folder and your done! Just load up the game and play
Hope this all helps,
if not there's plenty of tutorials out there on youtube that will show you the same
Once those launchers are installed can you only use certain mods provided by those websites Thanks. By the way.
Yes. Unless your willing to do a little searching. technic does have user submitted modpacks so you may be able to find just what your looking for, but it could be tough
Since noone has mentioned it, I feel I should mention my favorite mod pack launcher. It is called ATLauncher and can be found at www.ATLauncher.com. The mod pack I have gotten the most time out of is on there. Its called Sky Factory. It is created by bacon_donut on twitch (He is a very kid friendly streamer btw, though some times he has guest who are.....less so.....LOOKING AT YOU SEV!) It is a nice simple modpack where you start with nothing but a block of dirt and a tree. But if you follow the steps in the Achievement book, and do a little bit of research, there is no end to the things you can create! You can even ride a dragon! Down side is that it is 1.7.10. Something happened with 1.8 that upset a lot of mod makers, so they boycotted it. And 1.9 is so new, that there isn't even a stable release of forge (The API for mods, think of it is a coding dialect for programmers using java) I don't think anyone has a "stable" mod pack yet. But Feed The Beast will probably have one before ATLauncher. There are some who will steer you away from Technic because of "Drama which should not be named". But hey, welcome to the Wonderful World of Moding! And remember, Minecraft isn't just for kids! It is just a brilliant market to target with iconic mobs like Creepers and Enderman. Don't be afraid to get drawn in to the game and enjoy it with your daughter. I am in my late 20s, and 7 states away from my family. It is one of the few things that we can all get online and do without anyone arguing! I recommend it as a great family bonding game!

The modpack method seems much simpler. Sounds like you would recommend technic? Any risks associated with modding?
nope! pretty strait forward-
Make sure to get the mods you want from legitimate sources, like this Forum, the author's website or Curse (for example).
Here's a helpful website.
