i just died in my hardcore game in 1.9 because the standard water-above-sign drop failed. I had just built my sky base for use with a mob grinder for exp and was returning to ground level: dropped from Y210 to Y55, and the water drop failed. I used this drop earlier in the game to go from Y55 (overworked base) to Y11 for my mineshafts without incident.
I don't know if a one-deep water drop at foot level will work either now (which is what I used in previous game editions - 1.5-1.8) or whether I will need to go 3 deep like there really old versions of the game, or even whether water drops are even reliable anymore - can anyone assist? Thanks

A one- deep water will work. I tested the exact same thing you did and I survived. I think you missed the water's hitbox(does water even have a hitbox?)
Try digging a hole in the ground and remove the sign. That would be much more reliable.
