My sister and I have 2 different computers, both running Windows 7. We are on 2 different 100% legit minecraft accounts. We can both play single player fine on them. Where are trying to play on a Lan world. We are on the same WiFi which is set as a home network. When her machine hosts the Lan work, I am able to see it, but everytime I try to connect it says the connection times out. When I host it she can not see it. I have tried Direct Connect and it has the same error message.
Are there any settings that need to be changed on minecraft or the computers? My inexperienced brain thinks it may be a firewall issue, if it is, how do I solve it? Is it a different issue?
Please don't re-direct me to a different threat as I can't find any that match the problem I am having.
You are sure both machines are connected to a network configured as a Home network? This controls a fundamental set of firewall rules that will affect Minecraft.
It seems most likely to me that the firewall problem is on your sister's computer. It is blocking your incoming connection, and your game announcements.
The way to fix this depends upon which firewall software you are running. It should be a matter of allowing minecraft/java on her computer to receive incoming network data.
Post the names and versions of the firewalls on the two computers and identify which is which.
You probably need to follow these instructions for minecraft.exe and the java that you are using, choosing ALLOW:
1 In the Norton product main window, click Settings.
2 In the Settings window, under Detailed Settings,
click Firewall.
3 On the Program Control tab, in the Program
column, select the program that you want to change.
4 In the drop-down list next to the program that you
want to change, select the access level that you want
this program to have. Your options are:
Allow
Block
Custom
5 Click Apply.
The Norton Security manual warns that these "Program Rules" only take effect after the "Traffic Rules". So even if you allow minecraft specifically, a traffic rule can still block traffic that minecraft wants to send or receive.

Both computers are using windows firewall with Norton security.
