I'm using the standard Minecraft versions, no mods on anything.
This issue happened n 1.8.9 and is still happening on 1.9.
My setup:
Once PC
Two Laptops (all Windows)
Two Minecraft Profiles (1 for my son, one for my daughter).
What happened:
We were successfully using the Multiplayer feature for a local network game. The PC always runs the 'server' and opens to LAN. My Son's laptop was working fine until he used my Laptop one day (a different computer) to play the game. Now, we cannot connect back in using his Laptop, which is becoming really annoying because he has to now use my laptop, which I also use for work.
We keep getting the error message ("Failed to Connect to the Server" and the line below it "That name is already taken."
My laptop is not in use for Minecraft at that time the error message appears.
Help please! I want my work laptop back, but the kids are having so much fun with the multiplayer that I don't want to stop them from doing that either.
It is the same account, but the other laptop isn't switched on any more when the first one rejects the login.
Is there a way to Switch User without another account? I don't really want to get a third account just so that my two kids can play on another machine.
You only need two accounts for two people to play. The hosting computer that is open to LAN has to be using a different MC account than the guest that is connecting to it.

"That name is already taken" happens when you try to use the same account twice.
Make sure that the two computers aren't both logged into to the same minecraft user.
You may have to hit "Switch User" on one of the launchers before hitting Play
