It started last weekend. My PC crashed so in an attempt to play the pre-release I switched to my laptop. I tried to launch the game, but every time I hit the Play button nothing happens. I check the log and it says the launcher needs an update, and to restart. (Foolishly I thought little of it and did not save the log) I restart the launcher many times, no luck. I conclude that a fresh install might help (haven't used this laptop in months)
This only made the problem worse. I downloaded the installer (Windows MSI) and uninstall/reinstall. Now I've got an error stating "Unable to download minecraft. Please try again later" Native log pasted below
Native Launcher Version: 34

So I searched the web. One result tells me to disable AVG, but that didn't work. Another tells me to download the old launcher, that didn't work. When using the old launcher the only versions available are ones that have already been installed (no snapshots, no pre-releases, nothing prior to 1.8.6, no 1.9 after official release) Log of the old launcher below

Go to Control Panel -> network and internet -> internet option -> advanced tab -> find the security category -> uncheck "Check for server certificate revocation".
Tried it, no effect even after rebooting. Yet another post tells me I may need to clear out the .minecraft directory, STILL no effect.
...and that's everything I've done so far. Every result on google tells me to try one of the steps above. No combination allows me to download the game. Nothing allows me to access https://launchermeta.mojang.com/mc/launcher.json Finally I searched for a manual download of the jar. I found one, but it is devoid of sound and the subtitle feature does not work, so it is unplayable in survival mode unless I'm feeling extra hardcore.
I think I may have found some new issue. I'm not sure. I'm not one to ask for help without doing a ton of research before hand. And I operate a couple of servers, so this downtime is affecting them as well. Can anyone please help me?
What you have is a networking issue, almost certainly due to antivirus, firewall, or similar program on your computer.
Note that it is notoriously difficult to ensure that you have turned off the particular part of the security software that is actually causing the problem.
E.g. People always claim that they have disabled their antivirus, when they really mean that they have disabled the real-time scan feature when it's a web scanner / proxy function that causes this kind of problem.
AVG's antivirus program is known to interfere with Minecraft's self-update process. You will have to disable AVG's LinkScanner feature for Minecraft to update itself properly. To turn it off, follow these directions:http://www.avg.com/ww-en/faq.num-4498#tba5
Alternatively, use a different AV program, such as avast!

Someone on reddit informs me that he's got version 1.6.59 as opposed to my 1.6.51, but I downloaded it from the official location here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/Minecraft.exe

For AVG you want to look at this link: https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en_US&urlName=How-to-disable-individual-AVG-components
and make sure you have disabled the important components (Web browsing protection section First, then add Firewall if it still doesn't work)
