If they keep this up, nobody's going to be able to afford the computer needed to run Minecraft.
Here's my setup:
3.6Ghz dual-core AMD A6-5400 w/ onboard Radeon HD graphics
8GB RAM
Windows 7 64-bit SP1
1TB Sata 3 HD
I usually play with the MC window set to 1600x1000 because of a visual impairment.
On this setup, 1.8.x is just a tad laggy when I first start a new world. But 1.9 runs almost as bad as 1.8.did on my old 2.6Ghz/2GB dual-core Intel, which means it lags pretty bad for too long at first and somewhat when you enter an area that hasn't fully generated yet.
At least they appear to have fixed the numerous rendering glitches in the snapshots, but geez Louise -- has someone decided that the only people who play MC are hardcore gamers with $2000 PCs?
There's acceptable lag at world start-up, and then there's This Is Taking Too Damn Long.
And it's not fine after that. It gets lagalicious again when you enter somewhat complex areas that haven't been generated yet (big cave systems, extreme hills, mesas, etc.) Not as bad as at startup, but bad enough.
The point isn't that lag happens, but that 2x3.6 GHz with 8Gb RAM is a really powerful computer, and with every new release MC Computer Edition is obsoleting the lower range of desktop and notebook PCs. I can't even run 1.9 on my old 2x2.6/2Gb Intel -- I could barely stand playing 1.8 on it.
Maybe it's time to start compiling some of that Java into native code. This was supposed to be a game for everyone of all ages but it's turning into a game for hardcore gamers only.

I have a somewhat of a close setup but it is very laggy when you start a world but after that it should be fine
Yes, my profile picture is Alucard for Hellsing Ultimate.
I had about a 666% performance decrease. For me, that still means a solid 60 FPS, but it's a bit worrying.
