I wanted to start a new single player in 1.9, but when I load the world (just regular vanilla, no modifiers) the world gen seems to be trying to load all sorts of terrains in the same location. I can see water, roofed forest, swamp, forest, etc. all flashing in and out. No error messages pop up. I can die from drowning, or log out.

I'm having the same problem. I think i'm standing on a grass hill with a small oak tree...
Try to turn off VBOs and VSync. See if that works.
VBOs was already off, Turned off VSync, and its seems to be working fine. (I feel silly for not trying that.) Thanks.
No worries!
This issue is due to outdated graphics card drivers:
MC-62958 Massive Visual Glitching with VBOs off and Chunk distance over a level the graphics card cannot handle (Caused by outdated AMD drivers)
While changing settings can fix it it is recommended to update your drivers (see link for instructions).
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
