I loaded an old world that I haven't played since early 2012. Looking at the version history on the wiki, that puts it around the 1.1 retail release. The world was originally created in the alpha stage of the game. The world had been played a lot during the beta stage. So everything is there in the world as I left it, except for my chests. They are gone, as in invisible and intangible. This is not the "empty chest" glitch that I see everywhere as the chests themselves are gone. I loaded up the world in MCEdit and it shows the blocks where the chests used to be as Name: Future Block! ID: 54:0. So they aren't air blocks, but they aren't usable either.
Any suggestions on recovering the chests and their contents? I have a backup of the world from 05_04_2011. I loaded the backup and the world is marked as "must be converted." After conversion it exhibits the same exact behavior of deleting my chests entirely. I can place new blocks where the chests used to be. If I remove that block then it is replaced with an Air block.
Note that as indicated by the title you can't just load your world in a version prior to 1.8; you must break and replace them since invalid metadata is simply ignored by older versions; versions up to Beta 1.7.3 did not use metadata (set to 0) to indicate which direction a chest was facing in and 0 is an invalid value.
Also, you can recover a converted world - the original ".mcr" files are still there (located inside the "region" folder of the world save; delete the files ending with ".mca"). "level.dat_mcr" is the backup of "level.dat" after it was converted and can be renamed back to "level.dat", replacing the new file:
(too bad Mojang did not think of this when they released 1.8, which changes the item format; downgrading a world loaded or created in 1.8 is really asking for trouble, from missing items to chunk resets)

Thank you so much for this! Not only did you explain the issue, but you provided additional reading material and explained how to fix it. I read through the bug report. I decided to revert my worlds to the MCR format and then load them each in beta 1.8. After doing that I loaded them in retail 1.8.9 (current) and all the chests were available. Thank you so much for saving my old worlds!
I also noticed when loading the old worlds in beta 1.8 that any old chests were dark. Like the block they sat on was unlit. That went away once the world was loaded in the current version.

Hello,
I loaded an old world that I haven't played since early 2012. Looking at the version history on the wiki, that puts it around the 1.1 retail release. This is due to a bug in 1.8; if you want to load your world you want to load it in a version prior to 1.7, then break and replace your chests:
MC-70813 Chests missing when upgrading world from 1.7.x to 1.8

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
