I've been trying to create a new Minecraft parkour map recently.
It has LOTS of levels and each level requires lots of blocks.
I've been getting some INSANE lag from the map (Minecraft running at about 3 FPS).
What is odd and peculiar is that the insane lag only occurs in a certain region of the map.
And after running some tests I've found out exactly where this region is.
I used some of the in-game blank map items to map out my world (and used three of the map items)
In two of the in-game maps, I got 20-40 FPS depending on what I was doing.
But in the third in-game map (the one that is completely filled up), I got the INSANE lag from before (3 FPS).
The spawn of the map is in this laggy map.
This chunk contains the parts of my map that I built first.
There are redstone contraptions in this map (infinite arrow-shooter connected to a redstone clock, pistons, etc) but they are not in the laggy part of my map. They are in the parts that are running somewhat smoothly.
There is little to no water/lava in that part of the map.
There are no entities in that part of the map (unless you count me whenever I go over there).
I put this world on a server and had my brother connect with his computer (newer then my computer) and he got WORSE lag. He has Optifine and that didn't even help. He gets about 2-3 FPS in the laggy part and runs smoothly in the other parts.
I do use a resource pack (Simplecraft 16x16) but only because that gives me higher FPS (simpler texures = less lag). I know it isn't the resource pack causing lag because I tried turning it off and entering the laggy section and received 2 FPS.
Of my video settings, clouds are turned off, render distance on 2 chunks, etc.
I've done that to reduce lag.
I've also made my game window smaller. (which helps a lot in reducing lag)
I have no programs running in the background when playing Minecraft and still get this lag.
Is that section just laggy because there are lots of blocks? I've never heard of that causing lag but I haven't heard of many different lag issues.
I have a VERY BAD laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 Linux (from 2006 or 2007 I think?) and after lots of time spent trying to fix this lag I have managed to speed it up so I can actually play.
I don't know how to find the specs bit I'm not entirely sure if that matters with my problem.
Sorry for the late reply, lots of stuff have been going on recently.
Anyways, I didn't do anything, went into my world, and the lag disappeared.
I wonder why...
I didn't change my world in any way.

lag in specific chunks can be caused by corrupted data in that chunk. You might want to try a repair tool.
Ok, that sounds good...except I've never heard of any repair tools. Do you have any suggestions or personal favorites?
I've found Region-Fixer (from 2011) but other than that nothing.
