I have been away from Minecraft for quite some time (around a year), so please bear in mind you are essentially talking to a n00b
Story
My computer has contracted a virus that has razed the hard drive, so in an effort to save money, I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on it instead of Windows 8.1. Since Steam was taking hours to download all of my games, I decided to download Minecraft and take it for a spin. It downloaded and installed and I decided to try out Minecraft 1.8.9. That worked, so I then decided to download and install Minecraft Forge (1.8.9). The installation was a success, but when I attempted to start the profile Forge had created, it froze the computer completely. It looks ad though forge is still trying to load, but the only thing on the screen that moves is the cursor. I have tried opening this around 5 times, all with the same result. Also, when it does this, I have to forcefully shut my computer down.
With my head hanging low and my wallet empty as a keg of beer during Oktoberfest, I tried the next best thing: installing forge for 1.7.10. This was kind of the obvious choice, as most of the mods I had installed on the previous OS were for version 1.7.10. So I installed it. And after that, I tried to open the 1.7.10/w Forge profile. This time, though, it did not freeze the computer, just the game. So, like a scrub, I tried opening another one in the same profile, and then it froze my computer. So, after I forcefully shut it down and started my computer again, I tried it again, and this time it froze my computer entirely. I have no idea of what is going on, and I really need help.
SPECS.
Computer: Dell XPS 8500
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz × 8
RAM: 11.9 GB
Graphics: Gallium 0.4 on NVE7
Storage: 2TB
32-bit
OS: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Minecraft Launcher 1.6.44
Since my computer is now using Linux, I downloaded the installer files (.jar) for both versions of Forge and Minecraft (1.8.9; 1.7.10)
I would add some screenshots, but seen as how my computer is frozen during most of these times, I cannot.
So yeah, please help.
UPDATE: I recently had Windows intstalled on this computer, and it is now working fairly ok. I am still having trouble, but at least it doesn't kill my computer in the process
