I custom built my new pc running Windows 10 with my brother and I ran into a frustrating problem trying to install optifine.
What I did was install the latest version of java for a 64 bit OS into my x86 files(as far as I know, that is where I should install 64 bit programs...) I don't really know just how java is used with whatever programs it runs, but I know that it is quite useful, especially when doing a lot of minecraft stuff with mods. I just decided to install it and hopefully get it out of the way, but I ran into a little problem when I tried to install optifine the normal way. I just downloaded optifine and double clicked it, but java was not the default way to open the file after I unzipped it. I drug it to the desktop from winrar and tried it, but it said to pick a way to open the file. I didn't see java in the "Open with" options, so I navigated the "Choose another app","More apps" and "Look for another app on this pc" buttons in the "Open with" menu. After I selected to look in my SSD: were my OS and Program files are located, I found Java installed in the Program Files (x86) folder...(as expected, right?), I opened the Java folder, went through to the bin and selected just plain old java(File description said ... Java(TM) Platform SE binary). I selected it and opted to open the Optifine file with Java, but every time I would select to open it, for a millisecond a black window would open and leave. It would only be there long enough for me to tell it was a black window and no longer. Sadly that is were I am at with it. I actually don't know if it is java, but I asked others who suggested it was java. I think the black window might be the command prompt, but I don't know. I am very poor at troubleshooting and not skilled with the command prompt, but I can work at it if I have instructions.
I would be so thankful to whoever is knowledgeable to help me. Sorry if I slaughtered the description on what is wrong, but i'm trying my best not to get frustrated at this. I uninstalled and re-installed Minecraft, Java and Optifine quite a few times to see if the different combinations might help, but no luck.
I thought I might just post a few pics of what I have tried in the process... Still might not help. The second pic I had to try to take the same time I opened the file.
I'm sorry, I don't exactly know what the cause of the problem is, so I don't know what to say. Plain and simply, Optifine won't install. I have tried to just double click the unzipped file, but it will not install the way that it usually would. A window like the one in the picture I provided keeps popping up and nothing further happens.
You can try installing Optifine by placing the contents of the Optifine jar file directly into the Minecraft jar of the version you are using (go into .minecraft\versions\ and copy the folder for desired version, then rename the copy; see here for details). I've always used this method to install Optifine without problems (double-clicking the Optifine jar should normally open an installer which does all of this automatically, you can also use Forge but if you are only using Optifine it is probably better to run it by itself since Forge adds a whole lot of code which may reduce performance).

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
