Yeah I know you've probably had something like this pop up a billion times but I've tried pretty much everything on any forum I can find to fix this but nothing's worked.
It's basically all in the title. I have a Dell XPS and I tried to play minecraft and it lags, not super awful, around 20 fps but enough to annoy me as my crappy pc with literally no hardware that is better will run it at 80
i don't know what's up with it, I can play on a heavily modded pack and it will still sit on an easy 20-25 fps, and a vanilla is still the same...
Okay so now I'm even more confused. I downgraded to Windows 8 and that brought the frame rate up to about 40. But it's the sa,e case as before, it sits at 40 no matter of whether the render distance is at 32 or 4 chunks (below that makes it go to 55), or if I have like 159 mods on.... And now my fan goes crazy when I play!!
This is the unmodded forum, if you have mods installed you are posting in the wrong place. (and yes Optifine is disqualifies you from posting in this forum)
What are you using for JVM parameters (screen shot).
you said earlier you are running java 1.8, yet minecraft is running 1.7, and why have you allocated so much ram? 1GB should be plenty (more ram does not mean more FPS)
Make sure that "Max Framerate" is set to unlimited in video settings. This gets set by the system incorrectly a lot of times. This tells the game not to draw faster than a certain framerate.
Also, only VERY powerful desktops can power a 4K display at 60Hz, so your laptop is probably drawing at around 30Hz, which is analogous to 30fps. I know of no laptop that can power 4K at 60Hz, unless its a $3k Alienware. If you want to get "true 60fps" then play without your monitor.
Yeah the Java thing, I didn't even notice that it is 1.7 now, I don't know what that's all about. Maybe I had the JDK version stuck in my head or something.., sorry
Alright so I messed around with the computers resolution, and it does some weird thing where when I go to full screen in minecraft, the "full screen" only fills a small part of the screen and I can't move the mouse past it
That's one of things mentioned specifically in the link I posted. It has to do with "Display Scaling" which you can disable. Read the stuff at the link.

Yeah I have the latest drivers

Provide facts not your interpretation of them.

I suspect that your problems might be related to your 4K display.
There have been numerous people coming to this forum (and others) with performance problems on their 4K displays.
Here's an example: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/games_windows_10/windows-10-wont-run-minecraft-in-fullscreen-in/31d48698-b2d3-4557-a10a-1a745bd2519b
Have you tried changing your screen resolution down to a more 'typical' resolution as an experiment?

You aren't helping. The settings clearly show 120FPS is the current max settings. It's also clear that MC isn't running anywhere near that limit.
