For the past week or so I have been trying to figure out how to join a server but I keep getting the same error message

I have looked in forums to see if I can fix this. I have found one way but when I tried it that was a bust as well.
Here is the fix I tried:
1) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc 2) Copy the file "hosts" to where ever you like, it's just temporary 3) Open the file with notepad and remove any line with Minecraft in it 4) Save and close the file and put it back in the etc folder and overwrite the old one 5) Have fun playing Minecraft again
I do not have a 'host' file with anything in it however when I follow the path it has provided. It is only a demo file.
