Now, I'm getting stuck with installing anything past OptiFine. I've tried to install the GSLS shader's mod (http://www.9minecraft.net/glsl-shaders-mod/), and the installation instructions, "Drag and drop the downloaded jar (zip) file into [the mods folder]", the game will not launch and crashes. I've been trying to use 1.8 versions of everything, and at this point I'm thinking of rolling back to 1.7 to see if that works better, but any pointers would be appreciated.
Also, is there one main site to grab mods that are known to work? I feel like I've gone from one end of the internet to the other to try and find working versions of each of these mods (Ideally, I want to wind up at Sildur's Shaders, so I'd need Forge > OptiFine > GLSL > Sildur's), and there can be different installation instructions for the same mod on two different sites. Very fractured and difficult to follow.
First off, 9minecraft is not the official source for ANY mod. As far as I know, they do provide official download links, but not official instructions and other necessary information.
Second, it's hard to be of much help without the crash report. But I'm guessing you're using a recent version of Optifine, in which Shaders Mod is built in. You can't run Shaders Mod alongside recent Optifine versions for this reason. Remove Shaders Mod and check Options > Video Settings for the "Shaders" button.

Hello again! I've found a lot of sites like 9minecraft that seem to just have links and instructions, this is just where I stopped searching.
I'm still trying to use the 1.8 Forge/OptiFine combo that you helped me with earlier today. I'll get a crash report tomorrow, but will also try running without the shaders mod. Thanks!

I'd say about 95% of mods (excluding ones developed in other languages and posted on, say, the Japanese MC forum) have their official information on Minecraft Forum. The other 5% might have their own website for all of that, but it's still very likely that they have something posted on Minecraft Forum that would refer you to that site.
Take a look at the link grimallq posted above; you should stay away from all sites on that list. Some of them, like 9minecraft, MIGHT have the decency to supply official download links, but it's still very unlikely that they'll have all the official information that you need, especially for something like Shaders Mod or Optifine.

Earlier today I had this issue, which got resolved with ChaosTheDude's help: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/modded-client-support/2596593-struggling-to-get-optifine-to-run-with-minecraft-1f

Notes - Provides a clientside in-game notepad.
Souls - After you die, a hostile Soul that stores your inventory will spawn.

Pick Block Plus - A clientside mod that significantly improves the vanilla pick block function.
And a few others that we don't talk about.
