I've been trying to get Minecraft installed again after being away since v1.6. I'm trying to get a specific HD mod installed which requires both Forge and Optifine, and I've got a recurring issue where the game will not start once Optifine is installed. Here are the details and the steps I'm going through to reach this problem:
NOTE: I saw that the mod says 1.5.2, so I'm assuming that it may be incompatible or something. If I need to run Minecraft in a compatibility mode for an older version, PLEASE let me know. Or, if there's a newer version of the same mod, I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could direct me to it. Before that though, I have to get the game running.
Installing Base Minecraft:
Downloaded the client from the Mojang site and installed it, it runs properly using my account details. I've made no adjustments to anything in the game, I simply run it to make sure it works before moving along to Forge. Version 1.8.9 runs properly.
Installing Forge:
-From the Minecraft Depot site, I use the link to go to the Minecraft Forge site and get the "Recommended" 1.8 - 11.14.4.1563 .jar Installer.
-Run the installer with default settings, "Install Client", unchanged directory to the Roaming folder (Minecraft itself is in the Program Files (x86) folder)
-Start Minecraft, select the "forge" account on the launcher and launch the game. The game runs properly and will load the world created on the Base Minecraft
Installing Optifine:
-From the Minecraft Depot site, I use the link to the Minecraft Forum topic to download Optifine and get the "OptiFine HD H1 Ultra for Minecraft 1.8.9".
-Once downloaded, per the instructions, I drop the Optifine .jar file into the Roaming "mods" folder
-Start up the Minecraft launcher, choose the Forge account and click "Play".
-The launcher then starts to run but fails and returns the error message below. (Leading "
" tag isn't present, it's a forum bug)
-At this point, I haven't done anything beyond this message. The files and information are scattered around and I'm not sure where to go or what to do.

You're trying to use Optifine 1.8.9 with Forge 1.8. That won't work. 1.8.9 and 1.8 are two distinct versions and are not interchangeable. Either get the latest 1.8 version of Optifine or update Forge to 1.8.9.

Notes - Provides a clientside in-game notepad.
Souls - After you die, a hostile Soul that stores your inventory will spawn.
Auto Refresh - Automatically refreshes your server list and alerts you when your selected server comes online.
Pick Block Plus - A clientside mod that significantly improves the vanilla pick block function.
And a few others that we don't talk about.
Where is Forge 1.8.9?
Thanks Chaos. I rolled back to Optifine 1.8.0 and it launches now.
