I am the Mom of a 10 year old who loves Minecraft and lightsabers. Am trying to help my son open/use "AdvancedLightsabers-1.7.10-0.7.2.jar". Unfortunately I know next to nothing about computers. I can see it in the downloads but I get an error message saying it can't be launched when i click on it. How do I unpack/open/use this jar file? is there a way to do this without buying a third party product? Hope this is the right place to post this.
Mods don't need to be unpacked they install in a much different way. To use the mod you first must download and install Forge, it's an API that allows mods to work in Minecraft. Download "Installer-win" for Windows and "Universal" for Mac/Linux then run the file. After installing Forge launch Minecraft to finalize installation then close the game. Next open your .Minecraft file (AppData/Roaming/.minecraft) and you'll see a new folder called "mods". You will place the .Jar files for the mod directly in this folder. Finally launch the game and the mod will now be active and installed.
When installing Forge be sure it is for the correct version of Minecraft, also be sure to have run the game version you wish to mod at least once.
hello i am my moms son replying i tried but it did not work info 1.8.9 installed forge already and and we have a mac book air
The problem is you're using a 1.7.10 mod in 1.8.9, mods made for one version of Minecraft will not work on another version. If you want to use Advanced Lightsabers revert Minecraft to 1.7.10 and install Forge for 1.7.10. To change Minecraft's version run the launcher and click on "edit profile", next use the dropdown menu next to "use version" and select "release 1.7.10", finally click on "save profile". You'll find few mods available on 1.8.9 as Forge for this version was only released a week ago. Even though it's a much older release 1.7.10 is still the prefered version for modding, 1.8 made it much harder to mod so most modders are waiting for 1.9.
You're trying to use an EXTREMELY outdated version of Forge. One so old that it was deemed experimental. Why would you use that over 1.7.10 latest? The latest is always going to be more stable than a prerelease.
You're also trying to run Forge universal rather than installer or installer-win. Don't do that. If you're trying to install Forge, download the latest installer-win (.exe) or installer (.jar) and run it.

Realistic Torches - Causes torches to burn out after a configurable amount of time.
Nature's Compass - A utility item that allows you to search for any biome's location in the world.
look at the text i can't install installer win or forge i already got 1.8.9 forge it wont let me get 1.7.10 forge
That's not how Forge works. You can install as many versions of Forge as you want. Already having installed one makes no difference. You just have to select the Forge version you want to use in the profile editor.
I now see you're on a Mac -- you're going to have to use the .jar installer.
OMG thank you ALL!! SUCCESS!! - my son as you can see could not wait for me and jumped into the conversation. Together with all the input from above we have now managed to get ADVANCED LIGHTSABER MOD. YEAH!!

As a side note you may also like to try this mod, once you get everything working.

I've already explained it in just about the most non-technical way I can.
