To make a D: partition (assuming you have C: taking up 100% of you hard drive):
Right click on Start Button and click "Disk Management"
In the lower part of the windows you will see something like "Disk 0 Basic [your hard disk size] Online" in left column of the first row. Find a rectangle to the left that says "(C:)" (it might say something like "Windows (C:)" or another label)
Right click on it and select shrink volume and wait until another window pops up. In this window you can select how much you want to shrink it.
By default it will shrink as much as possible. You probably should leave it like that, unless you want your D: to be smaller.
Click on "Shrink" at the bottom of the window and wait while it reduces the size of your C:.
You now should see another rectangle with black above it. Right click it and click "new simple volume" (first option on the list)
Keep pressing next and finish. Wait for it to finish formatting.
Congratulations! You now have a D: partition. Windows might have given it a different letter, depending on other connected devices (CD-ROMs, USB sticks etc.). It does not matter while installing Windows, as it will default to D: after install.
