Whenever I try and render a new world it gets stuck on "Downloading Terrain" for a really long time, then when it does finally load the world, the terrain never renders; everything else is functional -the sun rises, the clouds move, you can move around, but there is no ground, just a black abyss. Then if you try to save and quit the game freezes and java crashes. I also tried it on 1.8.8 and 1.8.1 and they both did the same thing, except in 1.8.1 the chunks around spawn loaded, but nothing else did. I'm not sure if this is my computer causing this problem somehow? or if it's a bug? or if something got messed up in the .minecraft folder? What is interesting is that pre-existing worlds will load no problem.
However... if I go to my son's Windows login and try it from there, it works fine...
Edit:
Compared my .minecraft directory to my son's and found I had a lot of excess stuff. Can't recall when I put them there, but had all manner of resource files, etc. Clearing them out got me going again.

Same here, can't make any new worlds or servers, just won't generate. i'm just floating in blackness with a sky.
Same here.
Very disappointing. Had the urge to start fresh.
