I am using the same vanilla client version as I have been for the past few months (1.8.8) not a snapshot. This just randomly started happening the other day. Did mojang break something again?
where/when was this a thing? I see nothing in the launcher about 1.8.9... mojang being useless at supplying update information as usual. Also I have my client set to use latest version, which it claims is 1.8.8

Curse PremiumThe latest Minecraft version is 1.8.9, not 1.8.8. As the message says, you need to update your client to use Realms.
Realistic Torches - Causes torches to burn out after a configurable amount of time.
Nature's Compass - A utility item that allows you to search for any biome's location in the world.
Notes - Provides a clientside in-game notepad.
Souls - After you die, a hostile Soul that stores your inventory will spawn.
Auto Refresh - Automatically refreshes your server list and alerts you when your selected server comes online.
Pick Block Plus - A clientside mod that significantly improves the vanilla pick block function.
And a few others that we don't talk about.

Not sure why there wasn't any launcher news about it. But anyway, you'll have to select the version manually.
