If you happened to install the AMD Gaming Evolved app along with the Crimson update. Make sure that in the AMD Gaming Evolved (Raptr client) that you go into the settings and turn off the in-game overlay. I've had an issue with it, and the error you are getting may be related.
The below error message comes every time I try to play the game (after launcher).
Attempts so far:
1. AMD drivers are up to date (error occured after the "Crimson Edition" update, but don't know if it is related.
2. Java is up to date.
3. Tried uninstalling Java and just use the native Minecraft Java.
Any ideas on how to solve this?

Good tip, but sadly the AMD Gaming Evolved app was not running at the time and neither was the overlay turned on for Minecraft.
But thanks for making a suggestion!
