1) Flashing screen on windows 8 laptop For whatever reason, when my cousin plays Minecraft on his windows 8 laptop, the screen bugs out. The best way I could sum it up is it flashes. There are random flickering shapes, and he sees people as Steves that are extremely malformed. We've reinstalled Minecraft, relogged, restarted, played offline and on, and so far nothing has worked. It's only his laptop, and his is the only windows 8 in this house.
2) Whoever hosts the LAN world has the Steve skin I have the best computer in my group of three. I host an LAN world, and my cousins join in. However, once they're in they look at me and I'm Steve. I can see their skins, they can see each others', but not mine. It's not my account either, when they host it's the same way. I have no idea why this happens, we're connected to the internet, and are very close to each others' computers.
The game is really losing it's glimmer because of these problems. It's annoying that we can't simply play Minecraft with no problems like we used to. If you have answers to these problems, please help me out. Thank you for reading!

Seize the day!
#2 is how it has always been for LAN hosted games. The only way to avoid this is to have a dedicated server.
#1 is probably caused by an issue with the specific video driver / GPU he is using. He should fiddle with the VBO and mipmapping settings.
Alright I'll have him mess with it. How would I make a dedicated server?
Seize the day!
Download the server code from here (https://minecraft.net/download) and run it, then everyone joins to the server.
Oh ok. I fiddled with the settings for quite some time, yet the flashing is still present... any other ideas?
Seize the day!
