Hey everyone, the first thing I need to do is ask you to please bear with me, I'm trying to play Minecraft for the first time in about a year. What's happening is that if I put Optifine or any shader packs into my mods folder, the game will crash (either before leaving the launcher or when trying to load a world). If I don't have such mods in the folder (or if I have other types of mods there, such as Biomes O Plenty) the game will load.
I need to point out that I've been trying various things using two primary packages: the old 1.7.10 install pack that I made for myself last year (which worked fine before a computer reformatting) and a collection of the latest files for 1.8.8. I've gotten a couple of different crash reports (so I don't know which one to post, I'll gladly try to copy whatever is needed) but the situation is the same no matter what I do or which version of the game I try to play. Without Optifine or shaders in the mod folder, the game works fine. This includes Forge, which is also fully responsive when the mod folder is empty. If I have Optifine or shaders in the mod folder, the browser crashes before the game can load a world.
As mentioned, I recently reformatted my hard drive and this, coupled with the fact that the 1.7.10 pack that I tried is exactly what I used last year without issue, makes me lean towards a missing driver. If that's the case I'm not exactly sure what else to do since my Nvidia card already has the latest driver update. I've also installed both 64 and 32 bit versions of Java just to see if that makes a difference, but nothing. Minecraft's exe (javaw) is also already pointing towards the Nvidia card rather than my integrated graphics card.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? Would a crash report be able to identify whether it's a missing driver issue? If so, would that mean that there are specific Minecraft drivers? Thanks for any help, I've been at this for 3 hours now.
Alrighty. Here's the latest one. This is what I received when I tried to load the game with Optifine 1.8.0 HD U F8 jar.

This isn't the same crash report that I got when I was trying other things (such as a different download of Optifine or just a shader by itself). If needed I can try to recreate that other crash log but with any lick this will do the trick.
[00:05:16] [main/INFO] [FML]: Forge Mod Loader version 11.15.0.1591 for Minecraft 1.8.8 loading
[00:05:16] [main/INFO] [FML]: Loading tweaker optifine.OptiFineForgeTweaker from OptiFine_1.8.0_HD_U_F8.jar
Well for this crash it's caused by mismatching versions. Get 1.8.8 Optifine for Minecraft 1.8.8.
Although I'm not sure whether you already tried that
To be honest I can't remember if I have or not. I've seen so many different permutations of files from so many sites tonight I've gotten confused as to what I've done or haven't done. I may have tried it already because matching version numbers exactly is what I'd prefer to do from the start, but I think my failure with that is what led me to having the 1.8.0. Optifine that you saw there.
Regardless of whether I tried it or not I'll give it a try, I'm thinking that I'll get the first crash log that I referred to before if I do. I'll be back in a few minutes with the results.
Alright, I did try this originally. This looks more like the first crash report that I was getting earlier tonigjht.

Okay, so Forge 1.8.0 is the recommended version to use with Optifine 1.8.8.? I'll grab a copy of Forge 1.8.0 but I'm still confused as to why my uniform 1.7.10 pack (the one that worked for me fine last year) threw up a crash log just like the latest version does. If it would help, I could uninstall Minecraft and reinstall my 1.7.10 pack to see if the message is any different.
One question: One of the sites that I went through to try to find the GLSL shaders that I used last year said that they're no longer necessary because they've been integrated in Optifine 1.8.8. Is that true?
EDIT: I downloaded Forge 1.8.0 and tried to install it but it just throws up an error that says "you need to start 1.8 manually at least once" (or something to that effect). If it's referring to starting the game, I've already done that..? Maybe I misread your post. Were you recommending that I use Minecraft version 1.8.0, not Forge 1.8.0?
EDIT 2: Sorry for the lengthy post, I figure that this is preferred over double-posting. Anyway while awaiting your response I decided to go 1.8.0 with everything (game, Optifine, Forge, shaders) and this time it seemed to do the trick. So I suppose the good news is that the game is actually working now, but I hate leaving things loose without understanding what went wrong in the first place.
Well, Optifine 1.8.0 only works with Forge 1.8.0 and thus Minecraft 1.8.0
In fact, any mod that is for 1.8.0 will only work with that version of Forge and Minecraft. Forge for Minecraft 1.8.8 is still unstable, so Optifine (and a lot of other mods) still don't work with it.
Also, yes, Optifine basically has Shaders in it now.
Thank you for the help, and those answers. For at least the near future I'll just stick to 1.8.0 for everything then.
Now I'm just struggling to figure out why Biomes 'O Plenty isn't working. There are only about 700 versions of it for 1.8.0 and the ones I've tried so far either crash my game again or just don't show up in the world selector (despite the fact that Forge sees and has activated the mod).
Alright, I'll give it a shot. The latest possible 1.8.0 version gives me an error that says "Forge mod loader has found a problem with your minecraft installation. The mods and versions listed below could not be found. Forge: Minimum version required is 11.14.3.1368. I thought I'd downloaded the correct version of Forge, since it's working with the shaders now, but I guess not.
When I try a random older version of Biomes O Plenty for 1.8, I get this.

Not knowing what the hell that even meant I looked up "shader 2.4.12 complete" and was taken to a page that apparently hosted it. I tried to install it and it just regurgitated the exact same message, refusing to install.
I'll do another install using that specific version of Forge. I guess I didn't run across that one before for some reason. This has been a nightmare of links leading to other links leading to host pages and different versions of links and it's just been making my head spin.
Are the GLSL shaders the same as those found in Optifine? If so then yeah, they're redundant and I'll skip that step.
EDIT: I'm apparently unable to choose which biomes to exclude from Biomes 'O Plenty (the menu is there but the options are missing), which is really disappointing, but at least that version of Forge is, in fact, working with the mod.
Hmm, the config file isn't a bad idea. I think I may have done that before when I used the biome mod last year.
As to the links and so forth, I do try to keep it to this site only (it seems to be the cleanest and most organized) but sometimes I find myself googling for a certain item or file and before I know it I'm five links deep into some other site with a confusing layout and more links to other file hosts. This seems to happen most when I'm just trying to get certain things to work together (like I did tonight) and a simple search for a Youtube tutorial wind up sending me on a wild goose chase.
Regardless, I now seem to have the game running the way I'd been hoping it would, so I suppose my rounds of questioning are done for the night. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out, I really appreciate it.

This isn't the same crash report that I got when I was trying other things (such as a different download of Optifine or just a shader by itself). If needed I can try to recreate that other crash log but with any lick this will do the trick.

Curse PremiumWell for this crash it's caused by mismatching versions.
// I'm sorry, Dave.

Curse PremiumAh yes, if you want to use Optifine for 1.8.8 then don't use Forge, as Forge for that version is still unstable and unsupported by Optifine.
If you want to use both Forge and Optifine, use 1.8.0

Curse PremiumWell, Optifine 1.8.0 only works with Forge 1.8.0 and thus Minecraft 1.8.0
*Sigh*. Today's not my day.

Curse PremiumWell, if you're crashing, post the crash report here, so that I (or others) can help you with it.

EDIT: I found a later version of Forge 1.8.0 so I uninstalled and reinstalled my game using that. Then I went to install the GLSL shader and a popup window says "add profile 1.8 shadersmod for version 1.8 shadersmod 2.4.12 complete". Not knowing what the hell that even meant I looked up "shader 2.4.12 complete" and was taken to a page that apparently hosted it. I tried to install it and it just regurgitated the exact same message, refusing to install.
This game is really beginning to infuriate me.

Curse PremiumWell, since Optifine already has Shaders, just remove the shaders mod and use Optifine.
Also, use the recommended version of Forge here: http://files.minecraftforge.net/maven/net/minecraftforge/forge/index_1.8.html
It's recommended for a reason
I'll do another install using that specific version of Forge. I guess I didn't run across that one before for some reason. This has been a nightmare of links leading to other links leading to host pages and different versions of links and it's just been making my head spin.
Are the GLSL shaders the same as those found in Optifine? If so then yeah, they're redundant and I'll skip that step.
EDIT: I'm apparently unable to choose which biomes to exclude from Biomes 'O Plenty (the menu is there but the options are missing), which is really disappointing, but at least that version of Forge is, in fact, working with the mod.

Curse PremiumWell, you should be able to get most mods from these forums or CurseForge, and shouldn't have to go through many links
I don't know about the biome thing but you could look in the config file to see whether you could disable them there
Hmm, the config file isn't a bad idea.
