The actual save file might be inside the file that got unzipped. Look at your other saved worlds and the one you unzipped. Make sure they are identical in terms of the files inside them.

So I download the map, put it in %appdata%/.minecraft/saves, and unzip it. However, when I go to Singleplayer, I don't see the map. Help?

or %appdata%/.minecraft/saves might be the wrong place. The game directory is configured in the launcher profile that you are using.
There is also a button in the launcher profile page that will take you to the correct place (Open Game Dir).
