I found a number of similar, but old, posts regarding Avast causing problems with logging into Minecraft when launching the game, but none of them provided a solution which worked for me. When Avast is active, the launcher first throws a "java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out" error while trying to refresh the remote version list. Then, a few seconds later, it gives me a "com.mojang.authlib.exception.AuthenticationUnavailableException: Cannot contact authentication server" error when it tries to log me in. The second error appears to be caused by the first, but I can't tell for sure. The end result of all this is that after about 45 seconds, it only gives me the option to play offline. If I disable Avast, then the whole process takes about 5 seconds and works fine; no errors and I can play normally.
I have the entire Minecraft directory (game installed java is a sub-directory here) added to my firewall but it appears to not have any effect. Temporarily disabling Avast each time I want to log in is an ok short term fix, but it is hardly a long term solution. Since I don't want to permanently disable/remove my AV/firewall, I wanted to know if anyone else has encountered and/or found a solution for this problem.

Moderatoravast doesn't normally cause this issue, it maybe a bad install of it, try fully uninstalling it and then reinstalling it
