If it is downloading both versions when you click Play. No that is not normal. In such case it is best to delete all files in the Minecraft folder except for Saves folder. Then open the Launcher and put in Mojang account credentials and ensure you select 1.8.8 or use latest in the Profile Options. Then click play and see if it works then.
Even though the 1.8.8 jar is in the minecraft version folder, every time I start MC it downloads it again, plus 17.0.jar.
I s this normal?
