I'm running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and I've recently updated to the new launcher. Install goes fine, but when I try to open minecraft the launcher will freeze and say application not responding. I then have to force quit the application.
Specs? And what background programs are you running?

This is a common error, and you need to downgrade to Java 6. First, go to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-archive-downloads-javase6-419409.html . Then, install Java 6. Go to minecraft.net/download . Under Download minecraft.dmg, you will see an alternative link. Download Minecraft from that alt. link. If it doesn't work, update to Java 8 again and tell me.
