Hi, I'm new to this whole thing as well. We had the pocket edition on the iPad, we recently downloaded the PC edition (I'm not sure what Windows I am, maybe 7?) My two boys would like to play multiplayer, just the two of them. 2 laptops, next to each other. Do I need to buy another copy of PC edition to do this? Or just another profile? Or world? Aaargh I need to get this sorted so I can just go and play Barbies. I know how to do that!
if the 2 boys just want to play single player then yes they could share an account, but if they want to play online on a server together at the same time then they will require an account each

Since webrosc already answered your question, I'll answer your terminology questions to prevent future. confusion.
The PC edition is the game, but I'm sure you knew that.
A profile is basically what version of Minecraft you are playing on. (These screenshots were taken on my father's laptop, for what it's worth) At the bottom left corner is the profile editor, where you can change versions.
A world is simply a Minecraft landscape generated in Singleplayer. Hoped this helped!

Thank you!

Thanks so much - I'll ask them if that's how they want to spend their pocket money
Thank you!
