So every time I start up the launcher and press play, it loads, closes the launcher, then after a few seconds, opens it backs up again. I haven't able to play Minecraft at all since this, can someone help?

This is a common error, yes. This is a problem with the new OS X launcher. You need to sadly downgrade to Java 6. Go to the following website: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/java-archive-downloads-javase6-419409.html . Then, install Java 6. Next, go to minecraft.net/download . Under Download minecraft.dmg, there is an alternative link. Download and install that and you should be good to go. If this didn't work, you can update to Java 8 again and tell me.
