I recently purchased an Acer V Nitro VN7-571G-70HF. It has these specs:
I7-5500U (2.4-3.0GHZ)
NVIDIA GTX 950M 4GB GDDR3
8GB DDR3 RAM
1920x1080 15'6 Screen
My fps in minecraft does not go above 40. No matter what resolution I run it at. What is really odd is that the frame rate stays almost the same no matter what settings I apply ingame (it lowers a bit at the very high settings).
Is this performance to be expected of a computer with these specs?

Resolution doesn't effect Minecraft as much as other games, from what I found. What is your render distance? Did you try installing Optifine? Oh and are you sure Minecraft is using the nVidia gpu?
I am pretty sure it is using the NVIDIA GPU. It shows it is on the right hand side of the f3 menu. I get 40 fps on both 2 chunk render distance, up to around 14. I will try Optifine now.
EDIT: Ok, so I installed Optifine... now it seems to not go above 30? this is really weird,
Do you have vsync turned on? If you get the same performance with render distance 2 and 14 I think its a bottleneck, not sure if either gpu or cpu or something else. Can you give a screenshot with the F3 menu? (Maybe I'm missing something obvious, hopefully)
No worries. I hope there is a fix. It seems very odd to me. The GPU itself is fine, capable of running various other intensive games at good fps. Thanks for your time.

Do you have vbos turned on?
It was turned on... I turned it off. It seemed to make no difference.

Absolutely
here you go. Oh, and I have tried with vsync both on and off. Again, no difference. I am at a loss for this.
I'm not sure. I'll leave it up to someone else to figure it out, sorry.
