I have a GTX 980m with an SSD and an i7 4870HQ. I'm running Windows 8.1. Ever since I got this new computer I have been having a strange issue in singleplayer. Sometimes when I place blocks, the sound lags. Sometimes when I hit mobs they freeze mid-air, and then continue to move. It seems to be as if I'm playing on a laggy server, when it's singleplayer and shouldn't be getting any problems. I tested 1.8.8 and 1.7.10 and they had this problem, but 1.6.4 did not have it. I have the latest java version. I tried allocating more RAM but it did nothing. Also, my FPS is as expected with this machine (very high).I would be grateful for any help. Thanks!

To the best of my awareness, this is because newer versions of Minecraft basically run a server in the background for LAN operations. So really, Single Player is just a local server. If you keep the launcher open, you can see the output log and everything. I'm having the same issues in the 1.9 snapshots, but I can't for the life of me tell if it's the snapshots temselves, or an overload of entities and command block contraptions.

Strange thing is, this never happened on my old computer (with the same versions). Also, it does the same thing on every world, and my worlds do not have an overload of entities either. My old computer did not do this and it had worse specs. I did come to the conclusion that the local server was lagging because the chat had delay. I tried different java versions too. I don't know what is causing this.
Well, today I played the snapshot again, and it did have this issue. I'm not sure if this is the game's fault since my old computer didn't have this problem. Would updating my GPU driver do anything?
I just found out something new. If I boot up my computer and play minecraft, it won't have the issue. However, when I open steam, it starts; even if i'm already ingame. I went into windowed mode and started up steam while playing, and the issue started right away. Even if steam isn't downloading anything it still does it. Very strange conflict.
I never really edited them, so I think i'm using the defaults. But I'm not sure.
-Xmx1G -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:-UseAdaptiveSizePolicy -Xmn128M
Also, this happens on every custom launcher I have as well (Magic launcher, MultiMC launcher)
I tried allocating an extra GB of ram, but it did not solve anything, so I went back to -Xmx1G
Something is putting extra load on your CPU. From the descriptions so far that "something" appears to be another application.
You could try increasing Java proces priority.
I already tried that, but it had no effect. Also, steam (the application which is the cause of the issue) takes up a negligible amount of resources. I do not think it is a hardware problem; the task manager is showing normal resource usage.
Doesn't matter how "negligable" those resources are. If it runs on the same CPU core/thread as the Java process and trips it up.
EDIT:
And did you increase the priority of the actual Java process the game is running on or just the minecraft.exe launcher file?
I did increase the javaw.exe processes. But it did not help with the issue. If I host a LAN server both me and the other player will have full bars in the tab menu. If I connect to another player's LAN server, I will connect fine. Same goes for multiplayer (depends on if the server connection is good or not).
Ok, a bit of an explanation here. Because we're mixing terms.
What you're eperiencing in multiplayer would be caused by connection issues.
In singleplayer we call it "block lag". Which happens when the client part of the game gets out of sync with the internal server. Usually caused by issues with CPU or RAM access.
Has absolutely nothing to do with network/connection "lag" i.e. latency.
Thank you for explaining. But what would make steam "incompatible" with it? My older computer didn't have this issue, and the specs were significantly worse.
Well, it seems that I'm getting this issue even on the latest snapshot (15w41b). My question now is that is this issue ever going to be fixed? Would be a shame if they did not do anything

Alright, well I played the new snapshot and It didn't have this issue. But is it possible to fix it in the meantime before the official update?

Well, I updated my GPU driver and it did not help. There has got to be a fix for this...

Bumping just in case someone knows how to fix this.

Well, this issue fixed itself. I don't know exactly what happened. But thank you all for your support!
