My minecraft launcher said that theres an updated launcher that would make minecraft run faster, i downloaded it and made the mistake of replacing the old launcher with the new one. Now when i try to open the new one it says downloading runtime, after it finishes it says "Unable to update the Minecraft Native Launcher"
No, it doesn't. A lot of people are having this issue. From what I've read, it's an issue on Mojang's end. I'd just go back and re-download the old launcher.
Make sure you put the new one in the Applications folder. It should work.
its a bug... they dropped the new native mac launcher over the weekend. Nobody can play that uses the new launcher until someone at mojang gets in on monday.
those of you wondering why i don't have an active RP (so far none). i try. but whenever i get to the rules section of it my computer restarts. computer: i realise what your telling me and i give up.
Via IRC support at #minecrafthelp someone said they got it to work by disabling any antivirus software they had running, and when i said the same to the next person who came into the chat with the issue it worked for them, so maybe an AV issue and not directly Mojangs fault

yep! I run avast on el capitan and disabling it worked. This was the first time I have ever had to disable it to get something to install, and avast shows nothing in its logs. Weird.
Anyway, you can also re-enable avast after the download.

I am having the same problem.
Mine isn't working either, I tried for 2 or so hours. it doesn't work.

and just for minecraft support I only had to disable their web shield (not file system shield).
