So earlier today minecraft was working. Then all of a sudden, I couldn't log into my account. I reset my password multiple times, but it still doesn't work. I also tried my second account, which also didn't work. Then I thought it was an issue with my laptop, so I switched to my desktop, where I still can't login. Mojang says the username/password is invalid and minecraft says the username/password is incorrect. I tried many different passwords and tried using my username just in case, but it still won't let me login.
What does it mean to be throttled? Why does that happen? What the OP described is the exact thing that was happening to me today. I can't play mc with my son and now is one of the rare times that I have some time to do so. So it is very frustrating. I even tried to purchase a new account using another email and the system indicated that it could create the profile but not log me on. Grrrr.
After 3 incorrect login attempts, a lockout is placed automatically by Mojang's systems on your network to protect accounts against brute force attacks to gain access.
This lockout is automatic and cannot be overridden, it expires after 3 hours. Wait 3 hours, don't log in at all. Reset your password using https://account.mojang.com/password -- then try again.
The lockout affect you by IP so it will affect all accounts on your computer

Ok, I waited 3 hours and now it works. Thank you so much, it was really annoying me.
