I tried to open Mine craft like i normal do every day and today it didn't launch instead it says downloading launcher then after about 10 seconds or so it says unable to update Mine craft Game Launcher. It goes away after clicking okay, i try again to open it but it does the same thing again. Thank you for any info or help.
Ok, so I had the same problem and was able to solve it, as far as I know, so I'll post my experience here.
So, I had the same problem as you did, with minecraft unable to update the game. Depending on if you're using the .msi or the .exe, try to find a file called nativelog.txt
Inside the text file, there should be some lines saying something like "Starting download of: http:// launcher .mojang .com/ mc / launcher / jar / c6b4b58fd4c7521c2a0097cf1b29a2e57a62339e / launcher .jar .lzma" and "Encountered internet exception 12002: operation timed out"
Copy the the link in the file into your browser, download the file and extract using 7-zip or WinRAR, whichever you prefer. Now, run the launcher and you're good to go.
If you wanna use the shortcut the .msi installs, copy the content of the launcher folder you extracted into the .minecraft folder, and copy everything from there to C:\Program Files(x86)\Minecraft\game\.
thanks but i didnt do that, i deleted all mine craft stuff and redownloaded it but it still didnt work so i left it alone for a 2 days and did what i usually do on my laptop,gaming,browsing the web,etc.. now its working and im getting everything back. but thank you if i have this issue again i will do that.
also if i try to start it offline it loads fine without the updating and i can play it. but i want to go online and play on servers

Have you tried backing up your world saves, deleting install and going to minecraft.net and download fresh copy of launcher and reinstall?
