Minecraft works fine until I created/join a world. It takes an unusually long time to generate and download terrain, and once I'm in all I can see is the sky and the ocean and I seem to be falling. If I try to quit using the menu then I end up with a black screen with cursor visible and I have to forcibly shut my computer down because I can' t even bring up the task manager. The only way to avoid this I've found is to tab out and kill the process in task manager. I'm usually running Firefox with a decent number of tabs open when I open Minecraft, if that affects anything.
Whoa Gunpowder! Turn your render distance down. Way down. Then once you are using an unusually large and burdensome render distance perhaps your world won't take such a long time to generate, render and load.

That seems to have done it, thanks!
